Single Hung Windows
For new construction homes, apartments buildings and offices the single hung window are a standard option. In a single-hung window the bottom panel, or sash, moves vertically, while the upper sash remains stationary. When opened, the bottom sash obstructs, at least partially, the upper sash.
Single hung windows are a widely used option for one primary reason: price. They're just less expensive double hung windows; in fact, single hung windows can cost 10-20% less than their double hung windows. Even though this might not appear to be a big difference while replacing a few windows, property owners that need 10 to 15 windows will quickly realize the price difference is substantial. For those with a tight budget installing single hung windows will help them keep the costs down.
However, single hung windows have some limitations, and in the long-term a double hung window is a better alternative for many property owners. The reason is, only the bottom sash opens on single hung windows, offering less ventilation. In rooms that will require extra ventilation, for example the bathroom, this can easily result in increased moisture levels and with now way to vent this extra humidity, you will have issues with mold and mildew growth and odor.
For rooms that require extra ventilation
bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms... we recommend double hung windows.
